At 1300 hours on 24 December 2020, Toni K. Roman, age 74, passed from this life to join her parents Midd and Paul Roman. She succumbed following a series of cerebral vascular accidents. Toni received final anointing prior to her death in the tradition of the Byzantine Rite Catholic Church from Very Reverend Vasyl Symyon, Ukrainian priest with the Byzantine Catholic Archeparchy of Pittsburgh. Toni will be missed by her brother Corey, his wife Donna, niece Jacqueline and her husband Max and son Von. Also mourning are cousins Michael, Eleanor and her husband Mike, and Nadia. Poignant memories are held by close friends Herb, Arlene, Dory, Donna, and Mary Margaret among many others. Bittersweet and fond recollections are expressed by neighbors, Stan, Claudia, Diane, Ingrid, Katheryn, Michelle and Pam. Toni’s elementary and secondary education and formation took place at St. Xavier Academy in Latrobe, Pennsylvania. This school was the oldest institution of the Sisters of Mercy who came to the United States in 1843, with dedicated service to injured, sick and needy. These women retained the teaching academy and moved forward over time as educators and medical specialists in Pittsburgh, establishing what is now UPMC Mercy and Carlow University. Toni completed her undergraduate study in 1967 at Carlow with a degree in Biology and Medical Technology. She launched her career at Mercy Hospital in the Microbiology Lab, advancing over time to the position of Supervisor of Microbiology and teaching in Mercy’s School of Medical Technology. In 1987 Toni earned a Masters Degree in Public Management from Carnegie Mellon University while simultaneously serving UPMC Mercy as Assistant Lab Manager. Her career ascended to the position of Supervisor of Phlebotomy with additional work in the Rapid Service Lab, culminating nearly five decades of service with UPMC Mercy. Toni was awarded “Mercy’s Putting People First” for her willingness to do whatever it takes to serve the needs of others and lead by this same example. Over the course of her adult life Toni enjoyed travel and ventures by air, land, and sea. She valued art, culinary preparation, felines, literature, music, photography, seashells, swimming, technology, and theater. Her joy was always amplified when sharing these interests and outlets in a convivial atmosphere with family and friends. Toni was prepared for burial at sea through GENE H. CORL FUNERAL CHAPEL INC., Monroeville, PA. On 02 February 2022, at 1635 hours, before witnesses on Norwegian Cruise Line Escape, Toni was delivered to the sea from the hands of her trusted friend, Mary Margaret.
