Marilyn O. Hocker passed away peacefully in her sleep at the Concordia of Monroeville Nursing Home just outside of Pittsburgh on Tuesday, November 9, 2021, after battling Parkinson’s disease and dementia. She was 74 years old. Marilyn Olivia Hocker was born in Philadelphia, PA on February 23, 1947. Her biological parents were Norman H. Mitchell and Eva DeJournette. At the time of her birth, she had an older brother, Norman H. Mitchell, Jr. Their mother later married James H. Hocker who adopted Norman and Marilyn, giving them his last name of Hocker. Marilyn grew up in Philadelphia and graduated from Germantown High School. Afterwards, she attended and graduated from Penn State University in 1969 with a Bachelor’s degree in History. Most of Marilyn’s career was with the City of Philadelphia where she worked in several areas including Social Work, and the Office of Personnel (HR). Marilyn was known for being generous, kind, upbeat and having a dry sense of humor. She mixed those qualities with an uncanny way of speaking up and telling people directly “like it was”. Marilyn was a member of a legendary group of city co-workers who socialized after hours called The Rosebuds. Marilyn loved her family, cooking, relaxing in Rittenhouse Square Park in downtown Philadelphia where she lived before her illness, fashionable clothes, shoes, and looking good. She also loved her cats – first Coco, who was later succeeded by Jade. Marilyn is survived by her son, Sean N. Garrison; granddaughter Faith; brother Norman; younger sister Eileen; a brother and sister from her and Norman’s biological father – Anne Mitchell and Irving Mitchell; aunts and cousins; her most recent extended family at Concordia of Monroeville Nursing Home, and many friends. Services were private.
