James D. Carmino Obituary - Visitation & Funeral Information

James Daniel Valentine Carmino, 83 of Verona, died at home on June 8, 2022. He was surrounded by family and died peacefully after a long struggle with consequences of chronic obstructive lung disease. Jim was born on August 13, 1938 to Dominick Pasquale Carmino and Alice (Neimic) in Pittsburgh, PA. Jim’s childhood included various challenges, including several moves, loss of his father, separation from his mother for a period of time and entering the workforce at a very young age. Jim also joined the Navy at a young age and loved sharing stories of his time in Hawaii and military escapades. After discharge, Jim had many odd jobs. These jobs included finding city parking for patrons of local events, stealing newspapers to later sell, and learned at a young age that he’d have to hustle to find his own way. Jim was a hard-worker his whole life. He later found work at the steel mill and eventually started his own home remodeling business. Jim was proud to have had a supported two crews working multiple jobs at a time, while also supporting delivery for a local furniture company. Jim’s adulthood was full of opportunity, joy and love. 1975 was life-changing for Jim and for his family. Jim met his second wife, Grace, and life settled and also began anew. With a new blended family, Jim enjoyed a robust work life and a social life that included travel, camping, bowling, golf, dancing, playing cards, horshoe leagues, bocci, board games in the winter when work was slow and lots of family time. Jim was a consummate family man. When Grace’s parents became ill and needed help, Jim readily stepped up to move in and help as he could. Jim later needed to stop working due to his own illness, and Grace became the household breadwinner. Jim continued to enjoy camping and family time as physically taxing activities started to slow. Jim was predeceased by his parents, his siblings Mary Catherine (Harry) Mazzarini and Ron (Pat) Carmino, and most recently his wife, Grace, in December of 2020. Jim is survived by his children - son Scott Carmino, daughters Deana Binder and Denise Stahl. Jim was also blessed to have son-in-laws David Stahl and Bob Binder and daughter-in-law Tara Carmino. Together, the family has enjoyed supporting Jim, and Grace, and being sure to honor what was most important to them both – family. Jim and Grace had six grandchildren (Danielle Clayton (Matt), Nikki Russick (Mike), Josh Carmino, Heather Carmino, Luke Stahl (Olivia Scouten), and Leah Carmino. Jim cherished being “Poppy” to his grandchildren and five great-grandchildren (Jerry Kummer, Kaiden “Crash” Russick, Kayleigh Russick, Avery Clayton, and Kynnsleigh Clayton. Jim always held his nieces and nephews dear as well and has enjoyed constant support, visits and calls from them. In addition to his family, Jim enjoyed many deep, long-standing friendships with poker buddies, bowling and camping friends, mall buddies, and his recent coffee clutch crew at Panera. The family would like to thank Dr. Dana Brown and the staff of Renaissance Family Practice, the Palliative Care Team at UPMC St. Margaret, the UPMC Home Health Team (especially Patty from PT) and the team at Family Hospice and Palliative Care for their dedication and compassion. The family also wants to extend deep appreciation and gratitude for the ongoing support of Pastor Bill Howe and his wife Beverly. Additionally, the family would like to recognize and appreciate the call center operators of LifeAlert and the Penn Hills EMS crew for their prompt response and assistance as Jim’s illness progressed and he needed more help at home. Per Jim’s wishes, there will be no viewing or services at a funeral home at this time. Instead, Jim asked for a celebration of life and wants to remembered by favorite memories, time together, and joy. Details to follow regarding the celebration plan. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Family Hospice and Palliative Care or The Hospice and Palliaitive Nurses Foundation.
