Chia-tsun “CT” Liu, PhD Age 88, of Monroeville, died on September 14, 2017 at Forbes Regional Hospital in Monroeville after years with dementia and a life-ending fall. He leaves his wife, of 53 years Shue-Ying (Chung); daughter and son Lenna and Kenneth; grandsons Nicholas and Benjamin Sievers; 5 brothers and 4 sisters. CT was born in Taichung, Taiwan on September 27, 1928, the second of 12 children to Chiang-Shin and A-Kue Liu. CT and his older brother were sent to Japan for schooling and then drafted into military training during World War II. CT was in Hiroshima when the atomic bomb was dropped on August 6, 1945. His brother died from the atomic bomb dropped on Nagasaki 3 days later. After the bombing CT’s job was to identify the remains of atomic bomb victims. He was 16 years old. He returned to Taiwan in September, 1945. He had been entrusted to find the remains of his brother which were never found and instead returned home to his family with a box of anonymous remains. Like members of the “greatest generation”, CT led a full and productive life after the war. He obtained his BS from the National Taiwan University, MA from Wesleyan University, and PhD in physical chemistry from Yale University under Lars Onsager, Nobel Laureate. CT spent his entire career in research and development at Westinghouse developing batteries. CT enjoyed gardening, and exercising at the gym in Monroeville where he also taught tai chi. He will be remembered for his kindness, intelligence, and strength by his family and friends. A private memorial gathering will be held October 29, 2017 in Monroeville, PA. Memorial donations may be made in honor of CT to: From Hiroshima to Hope (fromhiroshimatohope.org) or Grow Pittsburgh (growpittsburgh.org/get-involved/give/become-a-member). Arrangements entrusted to the GENE H. CORL INC. FUNERAL CHAPEL AND CREMATION SERVICES OF MONROEVILLE.
