Jeanne Furrie

Jeanne (Powell) Furrie On April 14, 2013. Longtime resident of Monroeville, PA. Born May 29, 1923 in New Kensington, PA to Rose A.(Bracken) and Russell C. Powell. Preceded in death by her parents and six siblings, Nell (Powell) Myers, Edith Powell, William Powell, Paul (Dick) Powell, David Powell, and Audrey (Powell) Sabow. Beloved wife of 49 years to the late Henry J. Furrie, former Athletic director of Gateway High School. Jeanne taught for many years at Penn Hills High School. An inspiring teacher and coach, she also served on the WPGAL board and WPIAL basketball committee. Jeanne was inducted into the Penn Hills Hall of Fame in 1994, and the East Boros Chapter of the PA Athletic Sports Hall of Fame in 2004. Henry and Jeanne enjoyed traveling especially on their many trips to the Olympics. One of Jeanne’s fondest sports memories was attending the ‘Miracle On Ice’ hockey game with Henry at the 1980 Lake Placid, NY Olympics. A proud 1945 graduate of Slippery Rock University, she established the Jeanne Powell Furrie Scholarship to benefit Physical Education teaching majors. In 2001 she was inducted into the University’s Hall of Fame. Jeanne was an active member of the Cross Roads Presbyterian Church, and cherished friend to many. Her tenacity, wit, and unconditional love, help guide young and old alike. Her guidance and dedication to the education of her students will be passed on for generations. She is survived by Winifred (Furrie) and John Burdette of McMurray, Pa and many loving nieces and nephews. Her great nieces and nephews will miss her loving support and guidance. Her loyal Maltese ,"Tim", will be well cared for by family members. Family and friends will be received at the GENE H. CORL INC. Visitation Sunday, April 21, from 1-4 & 6-8 p.m. Funeral service will be Monday, April 22, 2013, 10 a.m. at Cross Roads Presbyterian Church, 2310 Haymaker Road, Monroeville, with Rev.
