Carol Spaeder

Of Murrysville, a devoted wife and mother, a faithful Catholic, an avid bridge player, and a fierce sports fan, Carol lost her battle with a recurrence of cancer on October 6, 2008. She was born on April 22, 1935 to Maurice and Genevieve Schaub. She married her husband Carl on May 12, 1962, and in their forty-six years of marriage, they raised three children, David, Mark & Anne. Carol's love and attention to her family consumed the first half of her life. She never lost this focus, always seeing herself first in her roles as wife, mother, and baker of her famously great apple pies. But once her children had grown, she allowed herself time for other interests. She and Carl loved to travel and had even planned her dream trip for November. She was also an enthusiastic sports fan, following everything from Penn State football to Pirates baseball to Pitt basketball, but reserving a special place in her heart for her beloved Penguins. But mostly there was Bridge. Carol became a Life Master in 2002 and played every chance she got. On the day her cancer was diagnosed, she drove herself directly from a bridge game to the doctor. She had trouble speaking but she had a good day: she and her partner won both games. She played throughout her treatment and looked forward to every game. Carol faced her death with courage and in Faith. She is preceded in death by her parents, Maurice and Genevieve Schaub. She is survived by her husband Carl; her three children and their spouses, Dave & Liz in Cleveland, Mark & Dawn in Tallahassee, and Annie & Joe Kelley, also in Tallahassee; her grandchildren, Katelin, Ian, Joey, Matthew, Dylan & Jack.
