Betty Jane Philips

Betty Jane (Carrigan) Philips, age 95, passed into the loving arms of the Lord on Sunday, May 4, 2025. She leaves behind a legacy of abiding faith and devotion to God and her family. Betty was born the oldest of 11 children to Michael and Anna (Smirga) Carrigan of East Pittsburgh, PA. Following her graduation from East High School, she accepted a secretarial position at Westinghouse. It was there that she met the love of her life, John Philips, in a work bowling league. They were married on April 18, 1964 and raised their family in Monroeville, PA. Betty was a long-time member of the former North American Martyrs Parish in Monroeville, serving with the Altar Rosary Society and Christian Mothers. She volunteered for many years with Meals on Wheels. She enjoyed reading, bible study, walking with friends, bowling, and bridge with the neighborhood ladies. She also loved her time spent with friends at Praise Moves. Betty took great care in creating a beautiful and loving home and never left the house without looking her best. Betty left Westinghouse to raise her three children and later started a second career in retail at H.Baskin Clothier and The Bombay Company at the Monroeville Mall. She is survived by her 3 children - Laurin (John) Vaccariello, Holly (Charles) Bens and Brian (Kara). Betty will be most especially missed by her beloved grandchildren: Andrew, Nicholas, Kathryn (fiancé Zach Breeden), Luke, Marisa (husband John Robertson), Joshua, Samuel, Jaden, Nathaniel and 1 great-grandchild, Lea. She is also survived by her sisters Lois (Art deceased) Tacker, Dolores (James deceased) Marsh, brothers Dennis (Gail) and Michael (Linda) and sisters-in-law Rosemary Carrigan and Ruthann Carrigan. She will be deeply mourned by her nieces and nephews, especially her niece Nancy (Van) Rankin. She is predeceased by her husband, parents, sisters Nancy Carrigan, Janet Filippino, Maureen (Michael) Pekich, Grace (Harry) Laughery, brothers Patrick & James and sister-in-law Amelia Pilipczak (Joseph) Sears. The family would like to thank the staff at St. Barnabas Retirement Village in Gibsonia, PA for taking care of Betty in her final years. A Catholic Mass will be held on Saturday May 10, 2025 at 11:00am at St. Bernadette Church, 245 Azalea Drive, Monroeville, PA with interment following at Good Shepherd Cemetery. Friends and family may attend calling hours at Gene H. Corl Funeral Home, 4335 Northern Pike, Monroeville, PA on Friday May 9, 2025 between 3 and 7 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or the St. Barnabas Free Care Fund, 5850 Meridian Road, Gibsonia, PA. 15044.
