Dr. Baocheng Zhang

Dr. Baocheng Zhang, 58, passed away peacefully on May 18th, 2024, after displaying remarkable courage throughout his battle with lung cancer. He is survived by his devoted wife of 33 years, Bo Zhu, and his beloved son, Eddie Tianze Zhang. Born on November 7th, 1965, in Yangzhou, China, Baocheng was the cherished son of Jinhua Zhang and Jinhua Ying. From humble beginnings, he carved a path of academic and professional success through unwavering determination. Baocheng earned a Master’s Degree from the prestigious China Institute of Atomic Energy, later contributing significantly to the Energy Research Center of the Netherlands and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries in Yokohama, Japan. His published works and research garnered widespread acclaim within the international nuclear energy community. In pursuit of a brighter future for his family, Baocheng immigrated to the United States in 2001, settling in Murrysville, PA. There, he continued to excel academically, earning a PhD from The Pennsylvania State University, and professionally, as a Fellow Engineer at Westinghouse Electric Company. Over his 23-year tenure at Westinghouse, Baocheng made substantial contributions to numerous technical projects, authored influential research articles, and patented innovative advancements in nuclear engineering. He was highly respected among colleagues for his expertise, innovation, and mentorship. Beyond his professional and academic achievements, Baocheng found joy in his hobbies and interests. A lifelong sports enthusiast, he played soccer and cultivated a deep love for golf, sharing this passion with his son and founding the Pittsburgh Chinese Golf Association, fostering camaraderie among Chinese-Americans in the Greater Pittsburgh tri-state area. To his colleagues, Baocheng will be remembered as a brilliant and hardworking engineer who always led by example. To his friends, he will be remembered as a kind and fun-loving individual who never passed up an opportunity to play a round of 18. And to his family, Baocheng will be remembered as a loving and devoted son, brother, husband, and father who selflessly prioritized others’ needs before his own. Visitation will be held on Friday, May 24th, 2024, from 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM, and on Saturday, May 25th, 2024, from 9:00 AM to 10:00 AM at the GENE H. CORL FUNERAL CHAPEL INC. AND CREMATION SERVICES OF MONROEVILLE, 4335 Northern Pike, Monroeville, PA 15146. A funeral service to celebrate Baocheng's life will be held on Saturday, May 25th, 2024, from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM at the Pittsburgh East Chinese Church, 398 Hochberg Rd, Monroeville, PA 15146. Following the funeral service, a committal service will be held at Restland Memorial Park, 990 Patton Street Extension, Monroeville, PA 15146. May Baocheng’s legacy of love, perseverance, and devotion continue to inspire all who knew him.
